Velvet Ice Proceeds to Benefit
Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research
Utica, Ohio October 7, 2008 -- Velvet Ice Cream Proceeds to Benefit Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research UTICA, Ohio
Velvet Ice Cream is producing its Vanilla Lovers Trio ice cream in a pink carton adorned with ribbons during the month of October - National Breast Cancer Awareness Month - to raise money for the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute.
Velvet will donate a portion of each carton sold to the Spielman fund.
"Breast cancer has touched our family on more than one occasion and its eradication is something I hope to see in my lifetime," said Luconda Dager, vice president of Velvet. "My mother, Tatla, survived breast cancer and my sister, Joanne, the food service director at Velvet, is fighting the disease right now. This effort is near and dear to our extended family at Velvet."
Velvet employees also are hosting fundraisers at the company's headquarters and production facilities during October for the benefit of the Spielman fund. "It's great to see the entire company getting behind the effort, and I'm appreciative of Velvet for its commitment to cancer research," said Spielman. "We share a common goal in our hopes to see the disease eliminated. "
Headquartered at Ye Olde Mill in Utica, Ohio, Velvet Ice Cream has been a family owned and operated business for nearly 100 years. Founded in 1914 by family patriarch Joseph Dager, Velvet has been run for four generations of the Dager family. Velvet produces more than 500 flavors of ice cream, which can be found in freezer cases throughout the Midwest. The landmark Ye Olde Mill, which houses the company headquarters, an ice cream museum and restaurant, attracts 150,000 visitors a year.
